Current White Rhino Population 2024. This post explores the current state of rhino populations by country, examines historical trends, breaks down the population by subspecies, and highlights ongoing conservation. The latest news has shown a 5.6% increase in the population of white rhinos from 15,942 at the end of 2021, to a strong 16,803 at the end of 2022.
That left the global rhino population of the five subspecies at about 28,000, which stood at 500,000 at the beginning of the 20th century. Based on publicly available data, our recent paper shows that, today, private landholders conserve over half of south africa’s white rhinos.
